Battery Operated versus Electric Models

Electric and battery operated stair lifts function in much the same way. They will both serve as reliable mobility tools that will safely transport you up and down your stairs with the push of a button. Whether you choose an electric or battery operated lift is simply a matter of personal preference.

Electric Powered Stair Lifts

Electric power models are designed to plug directly into a wall outlet, and the electrical wire can be neatly tucked into the track and along the wall to avoid creating a safety hazard. It is recommended that you visually inspect the power cord regularly and perform routine maintenance. If you do, an electric powered stair lift should continue to operate without problems for many years to come.

The one disadvantage of an electric powered model is that the stair lift will not function during a power outage. This can be a major inconvenience if the power is out for an extended period of time and you or a loved one are left stranded on one level of the home.

Battery Powered Stair Lifts

The biggest advantage of purchasing a battery powered stair lift is that it will continue to operate even in the event of a power outage. Typically, a battery powered stair lift will be able to complete several round trips up and down the stairs before it needs an additional charge. Battery operated lifts also have a backup power system, making them an ideal choice for areas You can breathe easy knowing that a friend or loved one won’t be without the use of their lift in case of a power outage.

On the other hand, battery powered lifts require a little more maintenance than electric ones, as it is likely that the battery will need to be replaced at some point over the life of the stair lift. This is best left to a service technician. The process requires removing the battery’s housing unit and disconnecting several wires. Replacing the battery will result in an extra cost, but the extra expense may be worth it for those who want the security of always being able to use their lift.
